For example a 10,000 sq ft warehouse against a 1 acre plot. Local units use the region chosen above (All India).

Enter both areas to see them side by side, the difference and how many times larger one is.

Conversions are for reference. They do not replace official land records or a legal measurement: for a purchase, lease or registration, go by the area in the title documents and land records, and confirm local units with the revenue office.

A floor plan in square metres, a warehouse quoted in square feet, a plot allotted in square yards and farmland registered in hectares or bigha: the same area is written in different units at every step of a property or logistics project. The area converter above changes any of them into all the others at once, with the values used in each Indian state for local land units.

Common area conversions

Square feet, square metres, square yards, acres and hectares have fixed international definitions, so these figures are the same in India, the UK, the USA and everywhere else. One foot is exactly 0.3048 metres, so one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square metres.

Warehouse and factory floor areas in square metres

Warehouses, factory sheds and godowns in India are usually let and sold by the square foot, while drawings, tenders and buyers from abroad often work in square metres. A 929.03 sq m floor is a 10,000 sq ft one: compare like with like before you compare rents.

Rent converts the opposite way to area: ₹20 per sq ft a month is ₹215.28 per sq m a month, because a square metre holds 10.764 square feet. If you are planning how much space your stock needs, the CBM calculator works out the volume of your cargo first.

Plot sizes in square metres, square yards and square feet

Industrial estates such as GIDC and MIDC allot plots in square metres, and residential and commercial plots are often sold in square yards, also called gaj or var. This table turns the usual plot sizes into the other units.

Indian land units by state

Traditional units such as the bigha, biswa, katha, kanal and marla come from local revenue practice. The same name can mean a different area in another state, and sometimes in another district of the same state. That is why the converter asks for your region. Every value says how firm it is:

  • Fixed value: the unit is defined the same way wherever it is used.
  • Usual local value: the value generally used in that state's land records and transactions.
  • Varies by district: the value differs within the state. The figure shown is the most widely cited one, so treat the result as approximate.

These states have no local unit of their own in the converter; it gives them the standard units and the Indian units with one value: Maharashtra (guntha, are); Madhya Pradesh; Odisha (decimal); Chhattisgarh (decimal); Tamil Nadu (ground, cent, are); Kerala (cent, are); Karnataka (guntha, cent); Andhra Pradesh (ankanam, cent, guntha); Telangana (guntha, ankanam, cent).

Units left out on purpose

Where no reliable value could be found, the converter leaves the unit out rather than show a precise-looking guess.

  • Gujarat: Not listed: the vasa (a part of the vigha), because sources disagree on whether a vigha has 16 or 20 vasa, and the 22, 24 or 25 guntha vigha sometimes quoted for parts of South and Central Gujarat, for which no reliable source was found.
  • Rajasthan: No official Rajasthan conversion table was found; a 1924 settlement report counted about forty different bighas in Jaipur State alone.
  • Maharashtra: Bigha is not a record unit in Maharashtra; if a seller quotes one, ask for the area in guntha or hectare-are.
  • Madhya Pradesh: Not listed: the bigha. Figures of 12,000 sq ft and 27,225 sq ft are both quoted for Madhya Pradesh, but no official source confirms either. Ask for the area in hectares from the khasra or B-1 record.
  • Uttar Pradesh: The kachcha bigha is not listed as a unit because it is a third of the pucca bigha in some places and a quarter in others. Khatauni records give area in hectares.
  • West Bengal: North Bengal (for example Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar) is said to use different values; they could not be confirmed, so the South Bengal values are used.
  • Punjab: Other local marlas are not listed: about 206.6 sq ft (Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar) and 182.25 sq ft (Kapurthala), and a 3,025 sq yd bigha in Ludhiana.
  • Himachal Pradesh: A 900 sq yd (8,100 sq ft) bigha is sometimes quoted online; no official source supports it.
  • Assam: Values in the Barak Valley could not be confirmed.
  • Odisha: A local guntha is sometimes quoted for Odisha; its value could not be confirmed, so only the standard guntha (1/40 acre) is offered.
  • Chhattisgarh: Not listed: the bigha, for which no reliable Chhattisgarh value was found.

Each regional value comes from a revenue glossary, a land records manual, a court judgment or a state gazetteer, checked against a second source. The Farbe Spaces area converter shows the sources state by state.

How the converter works

  1. Every unit is stored as square metres. The foot, yard and acre use their exact legal definitions (1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft) and the metric units are defined by the SI.
  2. Every conversion goes through square metres. Your figure is turned into square metres and then into each other unit, so results agree in every direction: convert back and you get the number you started with.
  3. Local units follow your region. Bigha, katha, kanal and the other local units use the value for the region you pick, and the result is marked approximate where that value varies by district.
  4. Rounding happens only at the end. Results keep about five significant figures and use Indian digit grouping (1,00,000), so 1 acre shows as exactly 43,560 sq ft rather than a long decimal.

Conversions are for planning and comparison. They do not replace the area written in title documents, land records or a survey. For a purchase, lease or registration, go by the official record and confirm local units with the revenue office (talati, patwari or tehsil).

Carpet, built-up and super built-up area

A converter changes the unit, not what was measured. Carpet area is the usable floor inside the walls, and it is what RERA uses for apartments. Built-up area adds the walls and balconies, and super built-up area adds a share of lobbies, stairs and other common areas. A 10,000 sq ft super built-up office can have noticeably less carpet area, so always compare carpet with carpet and plot area with plot area.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert square feet to square metres?

Multiply square feet by 0.09290304, or divide by 10.764. For example, 5,000 sq ft × 0.09290304 = 464.52 sq m. To go the other way, multiply square metres by 10.764.

How many square feet are in 1 acre?

Exactly 43,560 square feet. One acre is also 4,840 square yards, 40 guntha and about 4,046.86 square metres, and it has the same value everywhere.

How many acres are in a hectare?

One hectare is 2.4711 acres, and one acre is 0.4047 hectare. A hectare is 10,000 square metres, or 100 are, which is how many land records write it.

How many square metres is a 10,000 sq ft warehouse?

929.03 square metres, which is about 0.2296 acre of floor. The land around a warehouse is usually larger, so check whether a figure is the floor area or the plot area.

How many square feet are in a guntha?

1,089 square feet (121 square yards, about 101.17 square metres). There are 40 guntha in an acre, and this guntha is used in the land records of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Is a bigha the same everywhere in India?

No. Among the states in this converter, a bigha ranges from about 6,806 sq ft (Uttarakhand) to about 27,225 sq ft (Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana), and several states use more than one bigha, such as a pucca and a kachcha bigha. Pick your state in the converter, and check the land record or the local revenue office before you rely on a figure.

How many square feet is a vigha in Gujarat?

In Saurashtra and most Gujarat conversion tables, 1 vigha is 16 guntha, which is 17,424 sq ft or 0.4 acre. In areas of the former Baroda State a vigha is larger, about 25,623.53 sq ft (1.7 vigha to the acre), and that value varies.

Can I use these figures for a sale deed or a land record?

Use them to understand and compare areas. For a sale deed, lease or registration, the area written in the title documents and land records is what counts, and local units should be confirmed with the revenue office.

Is the area converter free? Is what I type stored?

It is free and needs no sign-up. The conversion runs in your browser: the numbers you type are not sent to Farbe. Your recent conversions are kept only in your own browser, and the page counts anonymously which units are used, without cookies.
